Have you ever gone to a workshop and get a total teacher-crush on the instructor?
Thats what happened to the Dancers that attended Dancemes Bellydance Intensive with Rahana In Mexicali B.C this past Saturday May 24th 2008 They fell totally in love with her dance style her teaching charisma and her flawless personality.
Her teaching style is different from many other workshop instructors, she doesn't so much command attention as she pulls everyone in by sheer charisma. She caresses students with her smile with her movements easy to follow, and she makes sure to point to specific body parts that should be working, which helps a lot. She also made sure to explain choreography while the music was stopped.
She started the class with a good warm up and stretch, then went into a series of bellydance technique drills, including hipwork that was going to be included in the drum solo choreography she taught later , she specifically instructed every single student in the workshop on how to identify every single bellydance style.
She taught some really unique choreographys. She plays with the speed of movements a lot when she dances, and the way she worked little accents into her movements was really new for the students. Everybody felt like they came away with some really great new ideas about how to to use tiny timing changes to make a big difference.
She taught the choreography dance steps one combination at a time, adding on to what she had done before, then having us dance from the beginning a couple of times to help us fit the combinations together. She made sure to regularly ask if anyone had questions, and seemed to keep everyone on track the whole time. And most Surprisingly every student understood her even if she was speaking a foreign language for mexicali Bellydancers every students knew what she ment she because students and instructor Rahana sopke the bellydance technique language.
I completely recommend taking a workshop with Rahana if you have the opportunity. No matter what style you study. There were classical modern cabaret and tribal students and professionals at this workshop and it seems everyone was getting something out of it. She's been dancing for almost 30 years, and she has a LOT to offer!
